Pregnancy Case Study

"I just found out I am pregnant but I have broken up with my boyfriend who is the father. I think I will just have the baby anyway."
This decision is every woman's right of course but I try and spend some time in my office with a young woman who tells me this story and see if I can find out why she would have a baby under these less than optimal circumstances. Even if the young woman has a supportive family and a job and a place to live and raise her baby I try and advise the woman that while she feels certain that her relationship with the father is over and she will be on her own, there are others in his family who may demand a role in the baby's life. She may find herself unwillingly a part of his family and this second set of grandparents may insist on visits and phone calls. Legal battles can ensue, resources and emotions can become strained and what was once a nice idea in early pregnancy can become years of bitterness and family hardship. If the father chooses not to help pay expenses, these many years become can very difficult to endure. I encourage women to have frank discussions with the father, their families and to have counseling at Planned Parenthood before making any final decisions about their babies.
